Increase your Website Income

In response to a few different requests to mentor people I am going to start writing some posts that are “Reader Assignments”. Right now, my plate is too full to take on a full mentorship role, however the whole point of me starting this blog in the first place was to help others in their journey to make money online. And also to keep myself accountable to what I was trying to accomplish. As you can see by my lack of posts lately, except for my month income reports, I haven’t been doing a very good job of sharing what I’ve learned along the way. So I am going to start doing these reader assignments to give my readers an easy, yet specific task they can do to help increase their income. These will usually be something that I have either being doing for quite some time and have had good results with it, or it may be something new that I’m working on that I’m really excited for you to try too.

The first assignment is really easy no matter what type of website you are working from; whether it’s a stand alone site, or a Squidoo lens, or a free blog.  First, I want you to take a few minutes to look at your website stats.  And I mean really look at them.  Look at the search terms that are bringing people to your pages.  Actually read them.

Then, after looking over your stats, write down a new idea for a page based on something that someone searched for on Google which brought them to your page. You would not believe how many new pages I write because I start getting traffic for something that is sort of related to my page, but it’s something that could really have it’s own full page. Put this idea on your “to do” list. If you don’t have a passive income online business to do list, then get one.  I use a small journal of lined paper which I call my “idea book”. It sits right next to me while I work. Nearly every page is scribbled on with to do’s, ideas, numbers, stats, thoughts, etc. If I don’t write it down I’ll forget my “great idea” by the next morning.

Next, add some new products to your page based on the search traffic you received. I think I already shared this, but sometime within the last month I was reviewing the stats on one of my Squidoo lenses. I have various types of a product on the lens. In addition to getting traffic for what I had on there, I was also getting traffic for some variations of the product that I did not have featured on the page. So I spent an hour adding new products, and making new modules and titles for these items. Within two days I had sales of the new items I added.

If Google is already sending you traffic for a product, but you are not featuring that product on your page, then you are leaving money on the table. It can be as simple as adding a different color variation of the item. Are people searching for the “dark skinned Elf on the Shelf” but you are only showing the “light skinned blue eyed Elf on the Shelf“?  Remember, people landed on your page because they couldn’t find what they were looking for elsewhere. Make sure they can find it on your page.  And if Google is already sending you traffic, and you really aren’t even focusing on that product, then how much more traffic do you think you’ll get once you actually add those items.

TIP: Once I see what product I need to add, based on the searches, I’ll type that search into my Jaaxy keyword research tool. The research tool might give me a better phrase to use that has more traffic and less competition. If I’m just adding products to an already built page, this better phrase is what I’ll use for my Squidoo module title.  And I’ll use another good one for my subtitle. On your own website, you could put this phrase in a H2 tag like this:   <h2>Dark Skinned Elf on the Shelf</h2>   The titles and subtitles are given more weight by the search engines, so you want to use your high traffic/low competition phrases there.

2. Write down one new idea for a page based on your traffic stats
3. Make a “To Do” list or “Idea Book” if you don’t already have one.
4. Add a few new products to your page based on your statistics.
5. In the comments below, report back what you worked on and include a link to the page.

PS – What should you do if you don’t have any traffic yet?  Then make another page on the topic of your choice.  Or make one about the Elf on the Shelf!  Or make one about a Christmas Gift you or your child received last year that you just loved.  I made a YouTube video of my kids playing in their cardboard playhouse they got for Christmas and it has 6800+ views in 11 months.  That, along with the coordinating Squidoo lens (http://www.squidoo.com/Cardboard-Indoor-Playhouses-For-Kids) has earned more than $150.  And I’m seeing more sales now that it’s Christmas time.   So just keep making pages!

PSS – What’s an Elf on the Shelf? It’s an elf, that sits on the shelf, and reports back to Santa every night whether the children of the house were naughty or nice. When it comes back each night it moves to a different place in the house. I just ordered one for my son after he came home from school and told me all his friends had one and Santa wouldn’t know if he was good or not unless the Elf was on the Shelf 🙂

  1. I am glad for you that your zazzle income has increased so much, how did you find the keywords for the zazzle pages, did you use jaaxy and if you did what was your keyword criteria (how many searches a month, and what seo power did you choose?)

    • Hi Ash,
      Yes, I use the Jaaxy Keyword Research Tool for my pages on Squidoo that I use to promote Zazzle items. The process usually works like this for me. I see something on Zazzle that I really like, lets say its a polka dot iphone 5 case. So I’ll just type into Jaaxy a phrase describing that item, in this case “Polka Dot iPhone 5 Cases”. If it’s a brand new product, like the iphone 5, I might look at the terms for iPhone 4 instead, because iPhone 5 might be too new to have good data. Then I’ll just look at the list. Which usually gives me more ideas. I normally use the phrase when it’s a “green dot” and the QSR is above 90. For traffic numbers it depends on how specialized the product line is. For example if there are really no good pages on the first page of Google for a very specialized item, like “Hot Rod Wedding Invitations”, then I might make a page even if the traffic is only 100 visits a month. Otherwise I’ll shoot for something over 400+ visits a month. If you find a phrase with thousands of visits a month, and a green dot, and a score of 96+, then you’ve got a gold mine. But I think it’s easier to find smaller niches with less than 1000 visits per month, than it is to find high traffic phrases that still don’t have much competition. Many times the results list leads me to click on some other phrase, which leads me to look through that list, which might lead me to another phrase, and soon I’m way off the topic that I started on, but I find a really good phrase with decent traffic and low competition.
